35 years for the Marathon of Hope

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope initiated by Terry Fox.

Anatomy 101

Sarcoma is a rare cancer (less than 1% of new cases in a year1) that affects supportive tissues of the body, including bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, and blood vessels. More common in children and young adults, sarcomas are named based on their originating tissues, such as osteosarcoma for bone or liposarcoma for fat2. There are over 50 types of soft tissue (non-bone) sarcomas3.

On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox started his run across the country after losing his leg to osteosarcoma. He aimed to raise $1 from every Canadian for cancer research, but ended up creating a revolution whereby over $650 million has been raised in an effort to end cancer4. He didn't get to finish, but is and will always remain a true, Canadian hero.
